What Is Family Promise?

November 16, 2022

For those who may not know what Family Promise is or need a refresher...

Through a unique partnership with diverse communities of faith, Family Promise provides emergency shelter, meals and supportive services to families experiencing homelessness in the Greater
Denver area.
The Family Promise of Greater Denver along with over 50 congregations, assist families by providing temporary shelter, meals, transportation and assistance finding work, housing, counseling and supportive services.
Family Promise operates under the model of “hospitality.”  Volunteers are the program’s “hosts” and the families staying in the Network are our “guests.”  We work to meet the guests’ basic human needs with a spirit of warmth and compassion.

How does Family Promise Work?
Three to five families, consisting of up to fourteen people are accepted into the network at any one time.  These families live in network churches for the duration of their time in the network.  Each host congregation hosts for one week at a time.  Families come to the host church at the end of the day, about 5:30 p.m., have dinner, prepare sack lunches for the next day, stay in Sunday School classrooms overnight, have breakfast and leave about 7:00 each morning.  Family members can utilize the day site, located at 1600 Downing St. as a base of operations during the day.  At the end of the week, their belongings and the Family Promise beds are moved on to the next host congregation.

What do Family Promise Volunteers Do?
The volunteers are the heart of Family Promise.  You are invited to be a part of this ministry.  Spend an evening or a night at church, prepare a meal, help with set up, clean up, laundry, donate supplies or simply come play with the kids!
We all may be a little rusty, but we hope you are all chomping at the bit to be a part of this valuable and special ministry we support!
We will be sending out follow up information for volunteer training sessions that you can watch from an online source or an in-person session at Calvary at some point prior to our host weeks.
If you are interested in volunteering for our August host weeks, please follow the invitation links provided to the Signup.com site and pick the volunteer opportunity that works for you.
We will also have sign up opportunities in person via iPad access on upcoming Sunday mornings at Calvary!
