Summary of Calvary's Name Discussion at our Annual Gathering February 9, 2026 Ru-Lee Weller Passman Congregational Summary Listening on Our Church Name** What we asked: How does the name “Calvary Baptist Church of Denver” help or hinder inviting people into our community? This question was part of our ongoing discernment around vision, mission, and values. What follows is a summary of what people shared—not a decision, and not a recommendation. What People Appreciate About Our Name Many participants named meaningful strengths in our current name: It reflects a deep and valued Baptist tradition, including commitments to soul freedom and faithfulness. It clearly identifies us as a Christian church. For long-time members, the name carries history, belonging, and trust. “Of Denver” helps locate us and connects us to our city. What People Find Challenging About Our Name Others shared concerns about how the name is received by people who do not yet know us: The word Baptist often carries assumptions that do not reflect people’s actual experience of Calvary. Some feel the name requires extra explanation before people feel comfortable visiting. “Calvary” can be confusing or generic, especially with many churches sharing the name. Several expressed concern that the name may discourage people before they encounter our community. A Key Insight from the Listening Across tables, a consistent theme emerged: Many experience Calvary as open, welcoming, and inclusive—yet some believe our name does not clearly communicate that to those outside our community. This insight invites reflection, not urgency. What Comes Next We are not rushing to a decision. This listening is part of a prayerful discernment process focused on faithfulness, mission, and hospitality. The question we continue to hold is simple: How can we best reflect who we truly are—so that those who are seeking might find a welcoming door? Thank you for being part of this shared journey.
