Sunday School Classes for Adults

Caritas Class 

Description: Caritas, in Latin, means "love of many people." This group holds on to the practices of caring for each other, holding one another in prayer, and learning together, whether celebrating or struggling, this group shows up for each other.  They have book discussions, study books of the Bible, and have done a series on world religions. All are welcome.

Explorers Class 

Description: The Explorers class studies an American Baptist Bible Study curriculum from Judson Press. This group looks at the historical/social background of the Bible, while bringing our understanding of its meaning in the modern world. We study passages from the Old and New Testaments, exploring the historic meaning and how it affects our modern lives. All are welcome.

Koinonia Class

Description: Koinonia, in Greek, has many meanings: community, communion, joint participation, sharing, and intimacy. We are a group of 20-25 people who enjoy studying and discussing together.  We study a Christian book or the Bible. We have interesting discussions and enjoy fellowship together. We have strong bonds of love and care for each other. We welcome visitors and new members anytime. All are welcome.

Nuer Bible Study 

Description: This class is for Calvary’s congregants from South Sudan. Discussion is based on study of the Bible and fact finding.

Ribbons Class  

Description: Ribbons class seeks to create a place for community and contemplation. When they gather, folks experience listening, sharing, care, support, and encouragement. In addition to prayer and connection, the Ribbons class enjoys book discussions focusing on wholeness, spirituality, and wellbeing. Class discussions are facilitated by different members of the group. All are welcome.

Voyagers Class 

Description: Voyagers is an age-independent class of 8-10 people each Sunday that studies a faith based book, a biblical text, or a historic figure of the bible. Topics are chosen by the group. All are welcome.

Interest Groups for All Ages

 

Baptist Film Fanatics 

Description: BFFs (Baptist Film Fanatics) is a group of film buffs who gather monthly via zoom to talk about, what else - movies! We study Film Genres, such as Action/Adventure, Romantic Comedy, Musicals, Epics, etc. This year we will examine a different film genre each month, with recommended films. 

Topics: For the first meeting on September 12 the primary film is Goldfinger (1964) and the alternative films are The French Connection (1971), The Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Speed (1994)

Craft Club 

Description: What creative outlet or craft project do you want to work on this fall? Bring your materials to Craft Club and let's be creative together. Whether you're working on a scrapbook or cards, making jewelry, coloring, knitting, or something else, join us! All are welcome.

Mexican Train Dominoes 

Description: This group meets to have a fun day of competition, playing Mexican Train Dominos. Everyone brings a treat to share and a lunch. We have a lot of fun playing; all are welcome. If you don't know the game, we will be happy to teach you!

Faith Formation Groups for Adults


Tuesday Bible Study  

Description: Tuesday Bible Study begins with prayer updates and praying for one another. Then we dive into studies on various books. In the past, we’ve studied Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I’ve Loved by Kate Bowler, Signs and Wonders by Amy Jill Levine, The Very Good Gospel by Lisa Sharon Harper, Wholehearted Faith by Jeff Chu and Rachel Held Evans, among others. This year we studied Sermon on the Mount by Amy Jill Levine, Womanist Midrash by Wilda Gafney, Light of the World by Amy Jill Levine, The Misunderstood Jew by Amy Jill Levine,and Romans for Normal People by J.R. Daniel Kirk. This is a hybrid group, so folks join in person and on Zoom. All are welcome. 

Curriculum: Study on the It Is Well theme texts (Spring)

Description: Tuesday Prayer & Study Group begins with prayers for self, family and others and then proceeds into book/topic discussions to grow in faith development and to deepen personal relationships. In the fall we studied What Do We Do with Evil? The World, The Flesh, & The Devil by Richard Rohr. All are welcome.

Christ in Crisis? Reclaiming Jesus in a Time of Fear, Hate, and Violence by Jim Wallis

Fellowship Groups for All Ages

Lunch Bunch

Description: Lunch Bunch meets monthly at a restaurant; it offers a chance to connect or reconnect with friends who also have a connection to Calvary. All are welcome. There is no topic, just good conversations with friends.

Men’s Group  

Description: Through fellowship and works, the Calvary Men’s Group endeavors to be a positive outlet for men of varied backgrounds and skill sets to offer their experience and their shared American Baptist heritage to benefit each other and create value in our community. We focus our efforts in three major areas: fellowship, education, missions. Men’s Group hosts educational programs that are open to all (not just men). Some months include field trips or excursions.

Pub 

Description: Join us on the second and fourth Mondays for Calvary Pub where we eat, drink, fellowship and take a different journey each week from books, theological topics, movies, current events and beyond. It’s a safe space where all thoughts and opinions are welcome. Watch Calvary’s E-News for more information. 

Curriculum: Topics vary. In the past, we’ve looked at Colonialism, the idea of Heaven, Table Talk, Family Feud, T-shirts & Truth, Habitat for Humanity, Comedy, Joy, Gratitude, and Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader. We’ve also hosted large community events like a Panel of High School Students talking about their high school experience with lockdowns and gun violence safety measures, and hosted Meet the Mates, an interview with the Pastors’ husbands.
